(Lawrence, Kan.) – Tonight’s finale for the summer Downtown Film Festival will feature a comedy from 1947, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. The film, starring Shirley Temple and Cary Grant, features the story of a teenage girl’s crush on an artist and the comedy that ensues when she sneaks into his apartment, only to be found by her sister.
Tonight’s finale will be shown at the grassy area at 9th and New Hampshire Streets, which is next to the city parking garage. Festivities begin with live music at 8 p.m. and free popcorn for the first 200 people. Prize drawings will be conducted prior to the film, which begins at 9:15 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. Prize drawing entry forms may be picked up at various Downtown merchants prior to the event. There is no purchase required to enter and individuals must be present to win.
Downtown Lawrence, Inc. in cooperation with Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, Sunflower Broadband, Kansas Arts Commission and numerous Downtown businesses, hosts the festival. This summer’s film schedule is available online at http://www.lawrenceks.org/lprd/filmfestival.

(Lawrence, Kan.) – Shoppers looking for bargains at the annual Downtown Lawrence Sidewalk Sale will find a great deal on the T — free rides.
Lawrence Transit System will waive fares on all fixed routes on Thursday, July 15, to help people get downtown and back with ease. Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 11 travel downtown.
With regular service from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., the T can shuttle shoppers all day. Advantages of riding the T include reducing traffic congestion and eliminating worries about parking.
“The Sidewalk Sale is a great time to try the T,” said Robert Nugent, Transit Administrator. “On a day that brings so many people downtown, riding the bus can be a real convenience.”
The free ridership day presents an opportunity for first-time riders to try public transit. Riders will find that bus drivers are an excellent resource for information. Drivers can help with transfers and explanation of timing points. To get help planning a route or for more information, call (785) 864-4644 or visit www.lawrencetransit.org to view routes and schedules.

(Lawrence, Kan.) – Summer can be the season of new homes and it is the time to review the city ordinance that regulates occupancy in single family residential districts. Properties in a single-family neighborhood are limited to no more than three unrelated people living together. In addition, owner-occupied homes are also regulated by the definition of family so that no more than three unrelated people can live together in a single family neighborhood.
A common occupancy violation in these neighborhoods is a home occupied by two family members defined as related by blood, marriage, or legal adoption and two other unrelated persons. When there is a group of four or more persons living together as a single housekeeping unit, all of the persons are required to be related.
In multi-family neighborhoods, no more than four unrelated people can live together in a single home.
An occupancy violation is often unintentional but has consequences for the tenants of such dwellings therefore it is highly recommended that property owners, property managers, realtors and tenants call the city’s Code Enforcement Division if there are questions regarding the legal occupancy of a dwelling.
The ordinance does not apply to a group occupying a dormitory, legal boarding house, lodging house, motel, hotel, fraternity house or sorority house.
Individuals needing to verify the zoning of a property can view a zoning map on the city’s web site at http://www.lawrenceks.org/information_systems/interactive_mapping and selecting Lawrence zoning under the Planning section.
For additional information, please contact Brian Jimenez, Code Enforcement Manager at (785) 832-3111.
