Snow Update: City crews pre-treat roads ahead of snow tonight

(Lawrence, Kan.) – City of Lawrence street maintenance crews began snow preparations today ahead of forecasted snow overnight. Crews have pre-treated roadways throughout Lawrence, mostly on main thoroughfares, hilly areas and major intersections. Snow is forecasted overnight, with the possibility of up to two inches. City crews will return to work at midnight and begin 12-hour shifts and work in 12-hour shifts until this snow event is completed.

“The most important thing for people to remember tomorrow is that roads will be slick,” said Mark Thiel, assistant public works director.  “This will most likely be our first snow event of the year and people aren’t used to driving in slippery conditions. Slow down, leave plenty of room between cars and give yourself extra time in the morning to get where you are going.”

After midnight tonight when snow begins to fall, crews will run salt and sanding routes to help with roadways. After the morning snowfall, freezing drizzle is expected in the evening hours on Monday night and there will be a chance for re-freezing.
