1)   Oread Neighborhood Path to be dedicated on Thursday

(Lawrence, Kan.) – The City of Lawrence, along with representatives from the University of Kansas and KU Student Senate will officially dedicate the newly completed Oread Neighborhood Path on Thursday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin at the western edge of South Park, where 12th Street intersects the park. After comments, the group will walk west on 12th Street to cut a ribbon at the HAWK signal at 12th and Kentucky Streets.

The Oread Neighborhood lighted pathway begins at 12th Street and Louisiana and slopes eastward to South Park, then to downtown Lawrence. The entire pathway is lighted with period lighting and is ADA-compliant. The project was paid for using KU Student Safety funds and Community Development Block Grant funds from the City of Lawrence.

The lighted pathway was a collaborative effort between the city and the University of Kansas. The project’s main goal was to improve the safety of the area with lights and lessen hazards to pedestrians travelling from campus to downtown Lawrence. Through this project, the city either repaired or installed new sidewalks and installed traffic signals at 12th Street and Tennessee and 12th Street and Kentucky. The traffic signals will only be in use when activated by a pedestrian needing to cross the street.

The entire path is lit with LED motion-activated lights that are dim until activated by movement along the path. The lighting is also set to project downward instead of up to lessen the impact on residents in the area.

2)   Public meeting planned to discuss revitalization of Deerfield Park
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will hold a meeting to discuss improvements to Deerfield Park 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Deerfield Elementary School, 101 Lawrence Ave. The public is invited to attend.
Deerfield Park, located at 2901 Princeton Blvd., east of Deerfield Elementary School, will be revitalized through the development of a new master plan. Deerfield Park is a 10-acre park that was purchased by the City of Lawrence in 1966. Over the years, the park was developed with tennis courts and a basketball court. In the 1990s, one of the tennis courts was converted into a roller hockey court and then in the 2000s it became a skatepark.   The courts and skatepark were recently removed due to the deterioration of the concrete surface, which made them unsafe for use.
At the public meeting, two concepts will be presented as to the development of the park to lead discussion.
The two concepts may be found at: http://www.lawrenceks.org/lprd/deerfieldpark-concept1.pdf and http://www.lawrenceks.org/lprd/deerfieldpark-concept2.pdf.
Those unable to attend the public meeting who may have comments regarding improvements are encouraged to contact the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office at 832-3450 or by e-mail at parksrec@lawrenceks.org.
For questions regarding the public meetings, please contact the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office at (785) 832-3450.
