1) Oread Neighborhood Path dedication time changed for today
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Due to the potential for severe weather in Lawrence this evening, the Oread Neighborhood Path dedication will be held at 4:30 p.m. today instead of 6:30 p.m. All other details remain the same.
The City of Lawrence, along with representatives from the University of Kansas and KU Student Senate will officially dedicate the newly completed Oread Neighborhood Path on Thursday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin at the western edge of South Park, where 12th Street intersects the park. After comments, the group will walk west on 12th Street to cut a ribbon at the HAWK signal at 12th and Kentucky Streets.
The Oread Neighborhood lighted pathway begins at 12th Street and Louisiana and slopes eastward to South Park, then to downtown Lawrence. The entire pathway is lighted with period lighting and is ADA-compliant. The project was paid for using KU Student Safety funds and Community Development Block Grant funds from the City of Lawrence.
The lighted pathway was a collaborative effort between the city and the University of Kansas. The project’s main goal was to improve the safety of the area with lights and lessen hazards to pedestrians travelling from campus to downtown Lawrence. Through this project, the city either repaired or installed new sidewalks and installed traffic signals at 12th Street and Tennessee and 12th Street and Kentucky. The traffic signals will only be in use when activated by a pedestrian needing to cross the street.
The entire path is lit with LED motion-activated lights that are dim until activated by movement along the path. The lighting is also set to project downward instead of up to lessen the impact on residents in the area.

2) Local Boy Scouts plan ‘Good Turn’ Saturday
(Lawrence, Kan.) – More than 100 area Boy Scouts will volunteer Saturday, March 31, in service of its 2012 Community Good Turn Project.
This year’s project is planting 50 shade, evergreen and ornamental trees in Oak Hill and Memorial Park cemeteries. The scouts and their parents will be assisted by Parks and Recreation staff and volunteers from Westar Energy and Wright Tree Service. The trees being planted will be replacing trees damaged by storms in recent history.
After a brief history of the cemeteries and some of the prominent people buried on the grounds, scouts will be instructed on proper tree planting and care, then begin the project.
Tom Sheely and Tom Volek are once again co-chairing the volunteer effort.
Memorial Park Cemetery is located at 1517 E. 15th St. and Oak Hill Cemetery is located at 1605 Oak Hill Ave. The project is to honor Arbor Day, which is being held on Friday, April 27.
