2) Department to sell woodchips
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual woodchip sale Thursday through Saturday, April 12-14, at the City of Lawrence Wood Recovery & Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th St., rain or shine, until supplies last.

The hours of the woodchip sale are as follows:

Thursday, April 12 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Friday, April 13 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, April 14 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
or until supplies last.
The woodchip sale is intended for Lawrence homeowners and not commercial businesses. It is held to eliminate excess amounts of woodchips the department has acquired throughout the year. The cost of woodchips will be $10 per pickup load with a slightly higher fee for larger trucks. Patrons are asked to bring a tarp for their pickup to secure woodchips, preventing woodchips from littering the roadway when leaving the facility.

Instead of purchasing woodchips throughout the year, Parks and Recreation recycles trees that are cut down throughout the city. The trees are then run through a chipper and used as mulch.

Woodchips, like mulch, are helpful when it comes to the growth of newly planted trees, when used in gardens or used in flower gardens. Spreading woodchips reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, prevents excess run-off, restricts weed growth, and replaces valuable nutrients into the soil.

For more information, please contact Lawrence Parks and Recreation at (785) 832-3450.
