1)   Earth Day activities announced

 

 
 
(Lawrence, Kan.) - The City of Lawrence celebrates Earth Day 2012 with a day of activities. The 12th annual Earth Day Celebration in South Park, hosted by the city’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Division, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14. The day starts with a parade, hosted by KU Environs, at 11 a.m. on Massachusetts Street from Seventh Street to South Park. All activities are free and open to the public.
   
The celebration in the park features over sixty exhibitors, activities for the whole family, live music, and food vendors. Information on hand will include waste reduction and recycling tips, benefits of composting, how to conserve energy at home and work, importance of wildlife and habitat preservation, and more. Also there will be alternative fuel vehicles on display in the park including the city’s Club Car Carryall-VI electric low speed vehicle and one of the city’s hybrid buses, the first hybrid buses to operate in Kansas.

6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Free ridership on the Lawrence Transit System, providing the experience and benefits of public transportation on all fixed routes. To get help planning a route or for more information, call (785) 864-4644 or visit

11 a.m. Earth Day Parade begins, traveling south on Massachusetts Street from Seventh Street to South Park, hosted by KU Environs.
 
 
11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Earth Day Celebration in South Park hosted by the city’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Division.
 
11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Douglas County Water Festival in South Park hosted by the city’s Stormwater Division offering interactive, educational activities emphasizing the importance of clean water to families, the community, and environment.
 
  
12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Tree identification tours in South Park led by Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department forestry staff.

2)   Registration deadline extended for Girls Fast-Pitch softball

 

  
 
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is extending the registration deadline for its Lawrence Girls Fast-Pitch Association leagues through Thursday, April 12.
 
 
Leagues available for play are eight years-old and under, 10 years-old and under; 12 years-old and under; 14 years-old and under; and 16 years-old and under.
 
 
The 8U league teams are formed by individual entry and will be based on school child is attending and their grade level. Equipment will be loaned to the team for the season. Registration for the 8U league is $65 per girl.
 
The 10U-16U leagues are formed by team entry only. The season will run from mid-May through mid-July. Registration is $900 per team for the 10U-16U leagues. For the 10U-16U leagues, teams are required to provide their own equipment including catcher’s gear and uniforms. 
 
 
 
Player eligibility is determined by the age of the participant as of Jan. 1, 2012.
 
 
 
Registration forms are available at all Parks and Recreation facilities including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St.; the Administrative Offices, 947 New Hampshire St., Suite 200B.

3)   Volunteers needed to assist with flower planting in May

 

 
 
(Lawrence, Kan.) - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has additional opportunities for citizens and businesses to assist with planting flowers in Downtown Lawrence and city parks.
 
 
Volunteers are asked to assist From 8 a.m. to noon on one or more of the following dates:
 
 
Friday, April 27, in the Downtown Lawrence Area
 
 
Saturday, May 5, Downtown Lawrence and South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St.
 
 
Tuesday, May 8, South Park and Buford Watson, Jr. Park Between 6th and 8th Streets and Kentucky and Tennessee Streets
 
 
Thursday, May 10  Downtown Lawrence area; South Park and the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. 2ndSt.
 
 
The department is looking for 10 to 15 people each day/area to assist with the planting.
