Emergency Management now offering text or voice alerts
(Lawrence, Kan.) – According to the National Weather Service, there is a strong chance for severe weather this weekend. Now is a good time to review your emergency plans and take advantage of signing up for a new text or voice alert system offered through Douglas County Emergency Management.
This week, Douglas County Emergency Management Agency announced an additional means of public warning and notification of severe weather and other hazards in Douglas County. The Douglas County Commission at its April 11 meeting authorized making the system available for public sign-up. Local residents now are invited to register individually for severe weather watches and warnings issued by the Topeka National Weather Service to be delivered by voice message to their landline or cellular telephone, by text message, and by e-mail. The service will be provided without charge to county residents as IRIS (Immediate Response Information System) is currently funded through a Northeast Region Homeland Security Council grant. The system also has the capability of providing other health and safety information during disasters or other emergencies to subscribers in a specified geographical area.
For more information and to register for IRIS visit: www.bit.ly/IRIS_Info.
