1)    Lawrence once again named ‘Tree City USA’ by the Arbor Day Foundation
(Lawrence, Kan.)  – The city of Lawrence was once again named a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the 34thconsecutive year.
Lawrence also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for the 20th straight year for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program in the areas of education, planning and management, park and open spaces, partnerships and other areas related to developing a high level of tree care.
The Tree City USA designation has been given to the City of Lawrence because it has met four standards, which are having a tree department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and having an Arbor Day observance.
The department will celebrate through a proclamation by the Lawrence City Commission at the April 24 meeting. A special community tree planting was held earlier this month with area Boys Scouts, along with their leaders and city staff.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
For more information, please contact Crystal Miles, horticulture and forestry manager, at (785) 832-7970.
