Summer camps offered to keep kids active
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of experiences for children throughout the summer.
The long-running, Summer Playgrounds is being offered at five sites this summer. Sites include: Edgewood Park, Maple Lane and Miller Drive; Holcom Park, 27th Street and Lawrence Avenue; South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Broken Arrow Park, 2900 Louisiana St. and Sunflower Elementary School, 2521 Inverness Dr.
Summer Playgrounds is open to children ages 5 years-old to 12 years-old and runs 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with options of two-week and four-week sessions throughout June and July. A variety of activities, games and trips are done throughout the camp. Cost is $140 for the four-week session and $80 for two-weekly sessions. Wet-N-Wild Aquatic Camp is being offered for children ages 5 years-old to 12 years-old at the Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St. It is being held 8 a.m. to Noon Monday through Friday, July 23-27; July 30- Aug. 3 and Aug. 6-10. Cost is $60 for the camp. Participants will learn swimming techniques and have water safety instruction. Healthy snacks will be provided each day and on the last day of camp participants will celebrate with a pizza party. Snacks are included in the fee. Center Stage Camp is open to children ages 7 years-old to 12 years-old at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St. The camp will expose youth to a variety of dance styles through daily technique and structured choreographic activities. It will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 11-15 and July 16-20. Cost is $65 for the camp. Two-Day Golf Camp is offered at Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., for beginner and advanced juniors, ages 11years-old to 17 years-old. There is also a pee-wee camp for children ages 6 years-old to 10 years-old. The beginning junior camp will meet 8 to 10 a.m. and the pee-wee camp will meet 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 6-7; June 20-21; July 11-12 and July 25-26. The advanced junior camp will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 5-6 and Sept. 19-20. Cost is $60 for the junior camp and $40 for the pee-wee camp. Gymnastics Camp is being offered for children ages 6 years-old to 12 years-old at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. The camp will be held 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, June 4-8 and July 9-13. It will also be held 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 18-22 and July 23-27. Cost is $65 for all camp sessions. Tennis Camp is offered for children ages 10 years-old to 14 years-old at Holcom Park tennis courts. The camp runs 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, June 4-7 and July 16-19. Prairie Park Nature Center is offering a host of Science Adventure Camps for children ages 6-years old to 13 years-old, as well as a Naturalists In Training camp for those children ages 12 years-old to 16 years-old. Each week has a different focus, which includes: wildlife, conservation, outdoor survival and extreme animals. Each camp will include fishing, canoeing and archery. There will also be live animal programs. Camps run weekly June 4 through Aug. 3 and are $90 per week except the week of July 5 which is $72. The weekly topics are as follows: June 4 – Prairie Survivors; June 11 – Kid vs. Wild; June 18 – Most Extreme Animals; June 25 – Planet Explorers; July 2 – Eco-Energy Adventures; July 9 – Where the Wild Things Are; July 16 – Creature Quest; July 23 - Planet Savers; July 30 – Naturalists In Training and Aug. 27 – Last Chance Summer Camp- Kid vs. Wild. Unified Day Camp has been developed for juniors, children ages 5 years-old to 12 years-old, and for seniors, those ages 13 years-old to 21 years-old. Camps are run weekly 12-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays, June 4 through July 27. Cost of the camps is $55 weekly for either the junior or senior camp, except for the week of July 5, which is $45. Both camps are fully integrated for youth with and without disabilities. Participants gain socialization, exercise and fun. Trips to the Outdoor Aquatic Center and in-town field trips are also planned. This is not a one-on-one program. The junior camp is held at East Lawrence Recreation Center and the senior camp is held at the Community Building.
