1)   Lawrence named ‘Playful City USA’

(Lawrence, Kan.) –The City of Lawrence has been named a “Playful City USA” community for 2012.

A total of 450 cities and towns applied to become Playful City USA members for 2012, but only 213 were selected as Playful City USA communities.

Lawrence was one of five cities in Kansas to receive the award for 2012, joining Derby, Ottawa, Parsons and Troy.

The City of Lawrence was selected as a Playful City USA community because of its focus on developing parks and play spaces near schools, increasing the number of areas that children can use as play spaces, as well as for its commitment to ensure a safe, healthy environment in which to play.

For being named a Playful City USA, The City of Lawrence is now an eligible applicant being considered for a playground construction grant that was submitted in March. The city will receive notice about the grant in the near future.

The Playful City USA program is sponsored by The Humana Foundation in cooperation with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving children’s play in the outdoors.  KaBOOM!’s mission is to provide a place to play within walking distance from every child in America.
