2) Kansas Junior Duck Stamp entries now on display at nature center
(Lawrence, Kan.) - The top 36 Junior Duck Stamp entries from Kansas youth are on display at Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 SW Harper St., through Sunday, July 22.
Most sportspersons and conservationists know about the Federal Duck Stamp, a stamp required to be purchased by waterfowl hunters. Revenues generated from the sale are used to purchase lands for the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Junior Duck Stamp program was created to help American youth increase their awareness and appreciation for wetlands and waterfowl. The Great Plains Nature Center, the Coleman Company and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sponsor the Junior Duck Stamp program in Kansas.
The top 36 Junior Duck Stamp entries – including the Best of Show from Kansas, plus the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning entries - from Kansas youth will be on display.
Christin Gillman, an 18-year old student at Lighthouse Christian Academy (Rose Hill), claimed the state’s top prize in the annual Junior Duck Stamp program on Tuesday, March 20. Christin has been participating in the Junior Duck Stamp program for the past 8 years and this is her first “Best of Show” finish. Her 2012 entry, entitled, “King Eiders at Sunrise,” features a pair of King Eiders enjoying a day on a wetland. Christin used reference photos from professional photographers at Birds in Focus, plus other reference materials, and created her entry using colored pencils.
Christin’s entry was chosen from 873 entries submitted from Kansas students in 21 public schools, 5 private schools, 28 home schools and/or home projects, 3 art studios, and 1 4-H Club.
The judges chose three 1st place, three 2nd place, three 3rd place, and 16 honorable mention entries in each of the four age groups for a total of 100 winning entries.
