(Lawrence, Kan.) – The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department encourages the community to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month throughout the month of July.

Parks and Recreation is an integral part of the City of Lawrence and benefits the community in many ways. Parks and Recreation programs help to build a healthy, active community, providing opportunities for citizens to create healthy, active lifestyles.

Citizens may celebrate by participating in a variety of activities offered by the department, or simply by visiting city parks and nature areas.

Parks and Recreations will offer several fun, family friendly events throughout July.  The following events will be held in historic South Park:

From 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, a Senior Tai Chi and Zumba Gold demonstration will be led by Susan Pomeroy, a Parks and Recreation fitness instructor.  Following these activities, the Lawrence City Band will perform at 8 p.m. with Our Own 4th of July Show.

From 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, a Belly Dancing demonstration will be led by JoAnne Zingo, Parks and Recreation dance instructor.  Following this activity, the Lawrence City Band will perform at 8 p.m. with From Russia with Love.

From 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Zumba in the Park will be led by Susan King, Parks and Recreation fitness instructor.  Zumba in the Park will also include a wellness fair where Lawrence area businesses will be available to provide information about health and fitness-related services.   The Lawrence City Band will then perform at 8 p.m. with its final concert of the season, The Grand Finale!

The U.S. Congress has declared July Parks and Recreation Month every year since 1985.  Governor Sam Brownback recently signed a proclamation declaring the month in the State of Kansas and Mayor Robert Schumm signed a proclamation declaring Parks and Recreation Month in the City of Lawrence.
