1) Switching utilities this month? Plan ahead for best service.
(Lawrence, Kan.) – The month of July is the peak season for the city’s utility billing division. This is the time of year when the city sees an increase in transfers, disconnects and new service installs since many student rentals take effect or end at the end of this month. The utility billing division sees a dramatic increase in call volumes in July. Last year, the division received 6,100 calls for service in July compared to monthly averages that range around 2,500 calls for service.
The city recommends using the online system to transfer service, stop service or start service. Applications for service requests must be received five-to-seven days in advance during the summer. If your service date request is within 15 days of the previous tenant’s service, the city will match the ending date of the previous tenant with your beginning date. Requests for service can be made online at www.lawrenceks.org/utility_billing/. Payments can also be made online at the same website with a $3.25 convenience fee charged.
Customers can obtain information about their utility account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling (785) 832-7878. Using the account number located on the front of the utility bill, customers can access current and past due balances, service disconnect dates, billing and payment history.
“In order to ensure that your city services are set up or disconnected when you need them, make sure to call ahead and allow plenty of time for the services to be completed,” said Megan Gilliland, communications manager. “We are here to help and we want to make this process easy and simple for our customers but we need some advance notice to make that happen.”

2) Traffic signal work to be completed on Thursday
(Lawrence, Kan.) – The City of Lawrence will change out a signal cabinet at 6th and Schwarz on Thursday, July 19. Crews will disconnect power at 8:30 a.m.; the intersection will be without power for four hours. Temporary stop signs will be placed for north and southbound traffic, leaving east and westbound traffic flowing. If the work cannot be completed in the given four-hour timeframe, the temporary stop signs will be in place until power can be restored.
