1)   City Commission to be briefed on Regional Recreation Center tonight
(Lawrence, Kan.) - The City Commission will be briefed on several items related to the proposed Regional Recreation Center in northwest Lawrence at their regular meeting on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 6:35 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda items and background materials are provided online for review at www.lawrenceks.org/assets/agendas/cc/2012/08-07-12/cmo_sports_village_8-7-2012.html
The City of Lawrence has created an email distribution list for members of the public who wish to receive email notifications regarding the proposed Regional Recreation Center, including public meeting notices and project updates. To sign up for the email list, visit www.lawrenceks.org/subscriptions and choose “Regional Recreation Center” from the choices under the Recreation and Activities heading. The city offers multiple email lists for various city programs, services, agendas and job listings.

2)   Volunteers needed for bicycle and pedestrian counts
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Volunteers are needed to manually count bicycles and pedestrians at several locations across Lawrence and Eudora next month. The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and the City of Lawrence will be conducting bicycle and pedestrian counts on Saturday, September 8 from noon to 2:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, September 12from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  A rain date has been scheduled for Thursday, September 13and Saturday, September 15. Those interested in volunteering for one or all of the scheduled count times are required to attend one of the following training sessions:
Carnegie Building, Conference Room, Lawrence
Tuesday, September 4 – 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, September 5 – 11 a.m. to noon
 
University of Kansas, Kansas Union, Pine Room
Thursday, September 6 – 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
 
Eudora, Kansas Parks and Recreation Community Room
Thursday, September 6 – 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Volunteers will be taught the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project method created by Alta Planning and Design and the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Volunteers trained in previous years are not required to attend training.
Data collected on bicycling and walking will assist city and regional leaders in estimating usage and demand for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.  The counts will also be used to track the region’s progress on increasing the use of non-motorized transportation, strengthen grant applications to leverage additional federal funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects, evaluate existing projects, and help determine the location of future investments.

3)   Coffee with the Experts cancelled
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department regrets to inform that the Coffee with the Experts scheduled for9:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Massachusetts St. has been cancelled.
The event will not be rescheduled.
