1)   Utilities Department continues to monitor drought conditions and area lake levels
(Lawrence, Kan.) - As record drought conditions continue to impact this area, the Utilities Department closely monitors the drought conditions and the water levels of Clinton Reservoir and the upstream reservoirs, which supply water to the Kansas River. Although the city met the high water use demands of customers this summer, the Kansas Water Office requested that all water suppliers in the drought area activate the Stage 1 Water Watch of their Water Conservation Plans.
The City of Lawrence Water Watch includes making public the rainfall, temperature, water levels and storage for the previous month. A summary of this information indicates that Lawrence is almost eight inches less than the average year in rainfall. The summary also indicates that the levels of local reservoirs, including Milford, Tuttle, Perry, and Clinton are below normal water level with the flows entering both Milford and Tuttle Creek less than the amount that the Corps of Engineers is releasing to maintain desired flows on the Kansas River. Current predictions for lake levels are that they will continue to fall if the dry conditions persist. The Department of Utilities will continue to monitor the drought conditions over the coming months.
Additional information on wise water use practices and the precipitation, temperature, and reservoir level data can be viewed on the Utilities web pages.

2)   Indoor Aquatic Center leisure pool to close Thursday, Friday
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will close the leisure pool Thursday and Friday, Sept. 20-21, to repair support brackets on the ceiling-mounted heat ducts.
The brackets are being repaired due to extensive corrosion caused by the pool’s environment where anything metal, including bolts and fasteners may corrode over time.
While the leisure pool will be closed to the public, the competition pool will available for public swimming, instructional classes and swim team practices with it normal hours of operation.
Those with annual and monthly passes may have two days added to their passes upon request.  Participants in swimming lessons and fitness classes will be notified of make-up dates for classes cancelled during time of the closure.
For more information, contact Jimmy Gibbs, aquatics manager, (785) 832-7946.

3) Conserve energy – Ride the T for free

(Lawrence, Kan.) – On Saturday, September 22, the Lawrence Transit System will offer a free ridership day on the T in partnership with the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair. Fares on Routes 1-11 will be waived all day.

Route 7 travels by the Holcom Park Recreation Center, which is the location for the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Riders will find that drivers are an excellent resource when learning to ride public transportation and are encouraged to ask for assistance.

“This is a good opportunity to get out and try the bus,” said Robert Nugent, transit administrator. “People will be learning about different ways to save energy, and public transit is a great way to do that.”
