1) Department to sell woodchips
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual woodchip sale Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 11-13, at the City of Lawrence Wood Recovery & Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th St., rain or shine, until supplies last.
The hours of the woodchip sale are as follows:
Thursday, Oct. 11 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 12 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 13 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
or until supplies last.
The woodchip sale is intended for Lawrence homeowners and not commercial businesses. It is held to eliminate excess amounts of woodchips the department has acquired throughout the year. The cost of woodchips will be $10 per pickup load with a slightly higher fee for larger trucks. Patrons are asked to bring a tarp for their pickup to secure woodchips, preventing woodchips from littering the roadway when leaving the facility.
Instead of purchasing woodchips throughout the year, Parks and Recreation recycles trees that are cut down throughout the city. The trees are then run through a chipper and used as mulch.
Woodchips, like mulch, are helpful when it comes to the growth of newly planted trees, when used in gardens or used in flower gardens. Spreading woodchips reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, prevents excess run-off, restricts weed growth, and replaces valuable nutrients into the soil.

(Lawrence, Kan.) - Infrastructure improvement projects for the week of October 8. NEW! Our construction projects listed are now available in a map format at http://lawks.us/construction-map.
Project: New Hampshire Street Parking Garage
Traffic Impact: The alley to the east of the New Hampshire Parking Garage (north entrance/exit) will have repairs completed during October 10 to October 17. The entrance/exit will be closed and all motorists will need to use the east entrances off of New Hampshire to access the parking garage.
Project: KDOT K-10 Resurfacing Project (project suspended until Spring 2013)
Traffic Impact: KDOT is resurfacing an 8.43-mile section of K-10 from the I-70/Kansas Turnpike Lecompton interchange south to the US-59 interchange in Lawrence (Douglas County). Project work includes patching of existing pavement, milling at ramps and bridge approaches, application of a 3/4-inch new asphalt layer on the existing mainline pavement, and the application of a chip seal on the shoulders, followed by all new pavement markings. The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life. Work will take place during daylight hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.
Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage, cones and a pilot car and flagger operation. Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes maximum and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible. There will be a posted speed limit of 55 mph and a 12-foot lane width restriction through the project work zone during working hours. No oversized or supersized loads will be allowed through the project work zone. Note: No traffic impacts or project work will take place on University of Kansas home game days in Lawrence. Two lanes are available in each direction on the detours but traffic will be noticeably slower and speeds must be reduced on the detours.
Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane closures. Drivers should expect major delays during peak travel times. Updated traffic information for the K-10/23rd Street bridge replacement project can be viewed online: www.ksdot.org/topekametro/laneclose.asp.
