Change your clock, change your battery
(LAWRENCE, KAN.) - When the daylight saving time ends this Sunday morning (November 4), the Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical Department reminds residents to make another change that could save their lives - changing the batteries in their smoke alarms.
Only operating smoke alarms provide protection to residents. The most commonly cited causes of non-working smoke alarms are worn or missing batteries. Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce deaths and injuries from fires. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing your smoke alarms every ten years.
“Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk, and a working smoke alarm can give them the extra seconds they need to get out,” Eve Tolefree, division chief, said.
Remember to ‘fall back’ Saturday evening before going to bed; set your clocks back one hour for Daylight Savings Time.
