City Announces 2013 Common Ground Program Sites

(Lawrence, Kan.) - The City of Lawrence has made eight sites available for community members to use for food production during the 2013 growing season. Growers and gardeners can apply for a free, three-year license to use these sites – which range in size from 0.2 - 4.5 acres. In exchange, program participants will propose a “Community Benefit Plan.” Examples of community benefits include donation of produce to local food pantries or participation in educational outreach programs.

The Common Ground Program makes City-owned land available for license for the cultivation and sale of plants, herbs, fruits, flowers, or vegetables, either as for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises. The program is intended to assist the development of urban agriculture and community gardens in the City of Lawrence, increasing local food production and providing community benefits.

The City released the Request for Applications (RFA) today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, and seeks applications from qualified individuals, businesses and/or nonprofit organizations.   Applications for the sites are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. The Douglas County Food Policy Council and City staff will review the applications, and submit recommendations to the City Commission by late January.

An information meeting will be held for interested applicants and neighbors 5 p.m.  Thursday, Dec. 13, in the City Commission Meeting Room (ground floor, City Hall), 6 E. 6th St. Local community members are strongly encouraged to submit individual applications and/or develop partnerships with local community organizations.

The Request for Applications can be accessed here: www.lawrenceks.org/common_ground
