1) On-going class offers exploration of language, culture of Japan

(Lawrence, Kan.) – Friends of Hiratsuka is offering an opportunity to learn about Japanese conversational language and culture through a free weekly class.
The class is held 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings in the Jayhawk Room at Fire Station No. 5, 1911 Stewart Drive. The class is instructed by Erika Norikami, Japan outreach coordinator with Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas.
Norikami is in Lawrence on a two-year grant from the Japan Foundation. She is from Osaka, Japan, and has a degree in English from Kansai Gaida University, Osaka. Norikami is working part-time with the Friends of Hiratsuka preparing students chosen to be delegates for next summer’s trip to Hiratsuka, Japan, for the trip. She is also working with Southwest Middle School students, teaching Japanese culture and language.

2) Pancake Breakfast with Santa quickly approaching

(LAWRENCE, KAN.) – Santa Claus is coming to town and will have quite the appetite! Join Santa and Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department for Breakfast with Santa 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.
Breakfast will feature pancakes prepared by Chris Cakes, “Kansas City’s original pancake flippers.” Sausage and orange juice will also be provided. In addition, children will have the opportunity to create a holiday arts and craft. The University of Kansas Cheerleading and Dance Team will also be in attendance.
Pre-registration for the event is encouraged, but those who would like to attend may also pay at the door. The fees are $7 for children three years-old to 12 years-old and $9 for individuals 13 years-old and older.

3) Boys intramural basketball program registration being accepted

(LAWRENCE, KAN.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the Parks and Recreation/U.S.D. #497 boys middle school basketball program. Deadline to register is Thursday, Jan. 10.
The middle school intramural basketball program is open to boys enrolled in sixth through eighth grades at any of the four Lawrence public middle schools. The objective of the program is to teach the fundamentals, skills and rules needed for school basketball team competition. Teams will be formed based on the school each boy attends. The number of teams for each school will be dependent upon the number of enrollees. Coaches will be provided for the program.
There will be weekly practices beginning the week of Jan 21. The season will consist of a six-game schedule with games being played on Saturdays. The program will be completed prior to spring break.
Cost to participate in the intramural basketball program is $55 per student, which includes a program t-shirt. Scholarships are also available through the Parks and Recreation Wee Folks Scholarship Fund, but must be applied for prior to registering.

4) Buses to reroute downtown for Christmas Parade on Saturday
The Lawrence Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. Buses will reroute downtown during the parade.
Routes 3, 4, 6, 10, and 11 will layover on the north side of 9th between Vermont and Kentucky. Routes 1 and 7 will layover in their usual location. Transfers between Routes 3, 4, 6, 10, 11 (west side of parade) and Routes 1 & 7 (east side of parade) will not be possible during the reroute.
As the parade moves to and from the staging area at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and downtown, there may be delays on Route 1.

5) City infrastructure improvement projects for the week of December 3
(Lawrence, Kan.) - Infrastructure improvement projects for the week of December 3. Construction projects listed are now available in a map format at http://lawks.us/construction-map.
Project: Miscellaneous Pump Station Reconstruction – Pump Station 15
Traffic Impact: EmCon, Inc. is reconstructing pump station 15 as part of City project No. UT0919CS. The work involves the installation of gravity and force main sanitary sewer lines and pump station facilities. Work the pump station will impact the 200 block of North Michigan Street. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within public right-of-way and utility easements. No access restrictions, lane closures, or detours are planned as part of this project.
Project: Crack Sealing
Traffic Impact: Crack sealing north of 6th Street in the neighborhoods east and west of Monterey Way. Temporary lane closures during working hours (weather permitting).
Project: KDOT replacement of K-10/23rd Street Bridge between Haskell and Barker
Traffic Impact: Traffic on both eastbound and westbound K-10/23rd Street from Haskell Avenue to Barker Avenue has shifted from the existing north/south shoofly detours onto the new K-10/23rd Street Bridge. For now, there will be two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane across the new bridge as project work continues. Crews will now begin work to remove the existing shooflys and complete work on the frontage roads on either side of the new bridge.
Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane closures. Drivers should expect major delays during peak travel times. Updated traffic information for the K-10/23rd Street bridge replacement project can be viewed online: www.ksdot.org/topekametro/laneclose.asp.
Project: 2012 Concrete Rehabilitation Program
Traffic Impact: Contractors for the City of Lawrence will continue the concrete rehabilitation program through November/December (weather permitting). Concrete streets to experience traffic impacts from patching include: Palmer Dr, Nicklaus Dr, Hogan Dr/Ct, Palmer Dr/Ct, east of Inverness Dr. Through traffic in both directions will be generally maintained throughout the project with flaggers, traffic control devices and signage. There is a possibility of street closures, if necessary, especially in cul-de-sac bulb locations. Residences and businesses will be notified if access to driveways will be restricted while work is performed. Project: Water main installation
Traffic Impact: Utility Department will install a new water main on Ponderosa Drive from E. 25th Street to E. 26th Street. There is no paring in the construction area and the road will be closed to thru traffic from Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Project: Levee trail detour for power plant expansion
Traffic Impact: A portion of the Kansas River levee trail has been closed for the construction of the Bowersock Mills & Power Co.’s new plant on the north bank of the Kansas River. A detour on the trail will take users from the trail to city streets crossing at the controlled intersection of 2ndand Locust Streets. Signage will be clearly posted marking the detour route to direct users throughout the detour. The city urges drivers and trail users to use caution when travelling through the intersection. The detour will run for the duration of the project, which is projected to last 20 months (starting April 2011). Project: Lawrence Municipal Airport sanitary sewer improvements
Traffic Impact: No impacts at this time, construction activities are currently on hold.
Project: Miscellaneous Pump Station Reconstruction

The work involves the installation of gravity and force main sanitary sewer lines and pump station facilities. Work on pump stations 28 and 35 will impact Sandpiper Drive, North Michigan Street, Pike’s Peek Place, and Riverridge Road. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within public right-of-way and utility easements. Work on pump station 37 will impact East 1500 Road from Elmwood Street to the pump station site located approximately 900 feet east of Lindenwood Lane. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within the public right-of-way and utility easements. No access restrictions, lane closures, or detours are planned as part of this project.
