1) City holiday closures; parks and recreation holiday hours announced
 
(Lawrence, Kan.) – City offices will be closed Tuesday, December 25 and Tuesday, January 1, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays.
 
There will be no commercial or residential solid waste collection on Tuesday, December 25 due to the Christmas Day holiday and Tuesday, January 1 due to the New Year’s Day holiday.  During these two weeks, the residential routes will be delayed by one day, moving Tuesday routes to Wednesday collection, Wednesday routes to Thursday collection, and Thursday routes to Friday collection. Tuesday commercial routes that fall on the two holidays will be completed on Wednesday both weeks.
Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Tuesday, December 25 and Tuesday, January 1. 
 
To report a waterline break on a holiday or weekend, call (785) 832-7800.
 
The Lawrence Transit System T and T Lift buses will not run on Tuesday, December 25 and Tuesday, January 1.
 
Parks and Recreation announces hours of operation for the upcoming holidays.
Recreation Centers: 
East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St., and Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St. will open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. The Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., will be open 8a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. All three facilities will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Jan. 1.
All centers will be open during their regular hours on Wednesday, Dec. 26 and Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Special Populations:  There are no scheduled activities until Saturday, Jan. 5.
Adult Sports:  League play is over for the fall season.  Winter league play for adult basketball, dodgeball and volleyball begin in the week of Jan. 13.
Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will have the following alternate hours:

Carl Knox Natatorium, located on the campus of Lawrence High School, is closed through Sunday, January 6.  It will reopen with its normal operating hours on Monday, January 7.
 
Recreation Instruction:  There is no recreation programs scheduled during the holidays.
Special Events:  There will be the following Special Events programming for children ages 5 to 12 years-old running during the holiday season:
Holiday Happenings will be held 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 26 -28, at Holcom Park Recreation Center.
New Year’s Overnighter will be held 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, to Tuesday, Jan. 1, at Holcom Park Recreation Center.
All Special Events require pre-registration.  For more information, contact Duane Peterson, Special Events supervisor, at 832-7940.
Youth Sports – There are no youth leagues currently in session. Soccer/Futsal winter league play begins Saturday, Feb.  2. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, Jan. 2.  Sixth, seventh and eighth grade Boys Intramural Basketball winter league practice begins the week of January 21. Deadline for registration is Thursday, Jan. 10.
Eagle Bend Golf Course And Learning Center - Monday, Dec. 24, will be open for an 18-hole public play until 2 p.m. Eagle Bend will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25. It will reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at noon for public play.  It will hold its normal hours of operation for Monday, Dec. 31, but will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1.  On Wednesday, Jan. 2, Eagle Bend will reopen at noon.  All days of operation are weather permitting.

2) Organwise Guys program teaches healthy nutrition, activity
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering a program for young people to learn the essentials of good health.
Fit-Trition Fun with the OrganWise Guys will be offered as a parent/child participation class and is open to children 3 years-old to 5 years-old.  The program will integrate the OrganWise Guys curriculum into this health education program, helping children build healthy habits by learning about their organs and what they can do to keep them healthy. Topics will include: an introduction to fruits and vegetables, bone health and germs. Lessons will be taught through the use of the OrganWise Guys characters, story books, interactive games, exercises and songs.
The month-long program will have two sessions available 10:30-11:15 a.m. and 2-2:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 8-31.  In addition, a Saturday session will also be available 10-10:45 a.m. Jan.5-Feb.23. Other month-long sessions will be offered at the same times and days, Feb. 5-28.  Cost of the program is $20 per session and will be held at the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.

The OrganWise Guys is an interactive, science-based education program that uses characters based on the organs of the body to teach children about nutrition.  The OrganWise Guys program was introduced to Lawrence Parks and Recreation through a grant received in May from the National Recreation and Park Association through the Kansas Health Foundation.

3) Teamwork awards presented at annual holiday luncheon
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department held its annual Holiday Luncheon and Teamwork Recognition Friday, Dec. 14.  During the luncheon, the Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Awards were also presented.
The Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Award, established in 1999, has three categories: category I and II are for an individual or group of employees who exemplify teamwork in both full-time and part-time capacities; the third is given to an outside agency or city department, individual or group who has assisted the department in obtaining success. The category II award was added in 2004 to recognize part-time employees.

Nominations are taken from employees and then reviewed by a committee appointed by the Employee Satisfaction Committee. Those nominees meeting the criteria of the award are then presented awards at the department’s annual holiday luncheon.
Receiving this year’s teamwork award for category I (full-time employees) included: Jim Beebe, park district four supervisor for his teamwork, especially with the organization of the holiday lights; Matt Cosgrove, park and facility maintenance II for working with the forestry staff; Paige Moore, adult sports programmer, for her work on the Special Populations trip, as well as assisting with the division; Bob Stanclift, adult sports supervisor, for assisting with the daily operations of the Special Populations Division and Roger Steinbrock, marketing supervisor, for grant writing and  assisting with city communications.
Receiving teamwork awards for category II (part-time employees) this year included: Jessie Danon, nutrition education program assistant; Josh Campbell, special populations camp counselor; Sharon Leggott, special populations instructor and Sally Trujillo special populations camp counselor for their work on the Special Populations trip.
Receiving teamwork awards for category III (other groups or individuals) included: Bob Brower, utility field operations manager; Shane Golden, utility field supervisor; Mark Hegeman, utility operations support and Phil Reid, utility operator for assisting with Parks and Recreation projects;  Anita Brown, solid waste field supervisor; Robert Morgan, Sr., solid waste operator II and Craig Pruett, solid waste operations supervisor, for collaborating with the Landscaping and Forestry Division in tree removal ; Jana Dawson, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member, for her work highlighting Parks and Recreation to the community; Trenda Garrett and Stan Vickers, special populations volunteers, for their work on the sets of the Special Populations Acting 101 class and Kyle Markham, manager of Jayhawk Tennis, for his continued efforts working with the department.
In addition, Kaiden Wilson was given the title of Junior Forester by the department for his interaction with the forestry crew this summer.  Four year-old Wilson brought the forestry crew popsicles and water on breaks while working on N. Minnesota Street. 
Beebe was also recognized for more than 35 years of service to the City of Lawrence upon his retirement.
The Teamwork Award was renamed in 2002 to honor Tom Wilkerson who served as assistant director of the department until his retirement in October 2002.
