1) 23rd and O’Connell signalization project begins 
(Lawrence, Kan.) – Contractors for the City of Lawrence will begin completing geometric improvements to the intersection of 23rd and O’Connell Road to accommodate turn lanes and a new traffic signal. The geometric improvements will begin on Wednesday, January 30. Crews will work to rebuild the intersection of O’Connell and K-10 Highway (23rd Street) during this time. This project is associated with the redevelopment of the former Farmland Industries plant. Intersection work will be completed by March 29, 2013 but the signalization will not be completed until June 2013.   Traffic on K-10/23rd Street will be reduced to one lane periodically (east and west) and the speed limit in the work zone will be set at 45 MPH.

2) LPRD to offer upcoming day trips
(Lawrence, Kan.) - Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department offers day trips to explore historic sites this spring. 
The department has planned a trip to Leavenworth, Kan., Thursday, Apr. 18, to visit the oldest city in Kansas. This day trip will include a visit to one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas, the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum. Along with a guided tour of the museum, participants have the opportunity to ride the restored 1913 wooden carousel. Participants will also visit the Carroll Mansion, share a meal with the Harvey Girls and tour Ft. Leavenworth, including a self-guided tour of the Frontier Army Museum. The trip concludes with a stop at the Corner Pharmacy, which boasts a soda fountain and a 40-foot long, handmade mahogany bar.
 
The cost of the trip is $89 and includes transportation, lunch, and admissions.  Bus departs the Wal-Mart parking lot, 550 Congressional Drive; at 8:00 a.m. with a return scheduled for 5 p.m. Deadline to register is Thursday, March 14.
 
The department has also planned a day trip to Kearney, Mo., Friday, March 8, to visit the Jesse James homestead. Participants will tour the museum, which features the world’s largest collection of James family artifacts, including Jesse’s boots and Frank’s letter of surrender. Participants will also visit the farmhouse, which includes Jesse’s original burial site. After lunch from a local family restaurant, participants will visit the Jesse James Bank Museum, located on the historic square in Liberty, Mo.  Time permitting; the trip will conclude with free time on the historic Liberty Square.
 
The cost is $89 and includes: transportation, tours of museums, lunch and tax. Bus will load promptly in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 550 Congressional Drive, at 8 a.m. with a return scheduled for 5 p.m. Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 1.
 
Register at any Parks and Recreation facilities including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St. or the Administrative Offices in historic South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St.

Project: New Hampshire Garage West Entrance Closure
Project Impact: The west entrance of the 9th and New Hampshire Parking Garage will be closed to traffic starting on January 24 for concrete repair. The entrance will remain closed until Friday, February 1. Alternate entrances/exits to the garage are available from New Hampshire Street. 
Project: Miscellaneous Pump Station Reconstruction – Pump Station 15 
Traffic Impact: EmCon, Inc. is reconstructing pump station 15 as part of City project No. UT0919CS. The work involves the installation of gravity and force main sanitary sewer lines and pump station facilities. Work the pump station will impact the 200 block of North Michigan Street. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within public right-of-way and utility easements. No access restrictions, lane closures, or detours are planned as part of this project.
Project: Crack Sealing
Traffic Impact: Crack sealing north of 6th Street in the neighborhoods east and west of Monterey Way. Temporary lane closures during working hours (weather permitting).
Project: KDOT replacement of K-10/23rd Street Bridge between Haskell and Barker 
Traffic Impact: Two lanes of traffic are available in each direction. KDOT crews continue to perform work on the bridge, utility work and removal of the shooflys. 
Project:  2012 Concrete Rehabilitation Program
Traffic Impact:  Contractors for the City of Lawrence will continue the concrete rehabilitation program through March of 2013 (weather permitting).  Concrete streets to experience traffic impacts from patching include:  Nicklaus Dr, Hogan Dr, & Palmer Dr, east of Inverness Dr. Through traffic in both directions will be generally maintained throughout the project with flaggers, traffic control devices and signage.  There is a possibility of street closures, if necessary.  Residences and businesses will be notified if access to driveways will be restricted while work is performed.  Please see the following link for mapped work locations for the entire street maintenance program for 2012: http://lawrenceks.org/public_works/files/2012_street_maintenance_AsBuilt_11x17.pdf
Project: Water main installation
Traffic Impact: The Utility Department will install a water main on Belle Haven Drive, from W. 25th to W 27th. The road will be closed to thru traffic and no parking Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. There is no paring in the construction area and the road will be closed to thru traffic from Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Project: Lawrence Municipal Airport sanitary sewer improvements
Traffic Impact: No impacts at this time, construction activities are currently on hold.
Project: Miscellaneous Pump Station Reconstruction
Traffic Impact: EmCon, Inc. is reconstructing pump stations 35 and 37 and decommissioning pump station 28 as part of City project No. UT0919CS. The work involves the installation of gravity and force main sanitary sewer lines and pump station facilities. Work on pump stations 28 and 35 will impact Sandpiper Drive, North Michigan Street, Pike’s Peek Place, and Riverridge Road. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within public right-of-way and utility easements. Work on pump station 37 will impact East 1500 Road from Elmwood Street to the pump station site located approximately 900 feet east of Lindenwood Lane. Residents can expect to see construction equipment, materials, and construction activity within the public right-of-way and utility easements. No access restrictions, lane closures, or detours are planned as part of this project.
