1) Twelve downtown businesses commit to saving energy  

(Lawrence, Kan.) – Twelve downtown businesses have signed on to participate in Lawrence’s Green Business Leaders Program. These Green Business Leaders will participate in classes to learn about energy efficiency, learn how to cut their energy costs with a free energy audit, and make improvements to their buildings to save money and energy.

The City of Lawrence is partnering with Westar Energy, the Chamber of Commerce, GBA Architects + Engineers, and Downtown Lawrence Inc. to help downtown Lawrence businesses save energy and money. The Green Business Leaders Program launched in early 2013, and as a pilot year, will focus on the downtown business community.
 
“Lawrence’s Green Business Leaders program will strengthen our downtown business community by helping businesses save energy which is good for the environment and their bottom lines,” said Mayor Bob Schumm.
 
The City of Lawrence is working to reduce energy use in city-owned buildings. Partnering with the Lawrence business community, the city hopes to meet sustainability goals.

2) T2040 Transportation Plan nearing completion, final public comments sought
(Lawrence, Kan.) - The Lawrence Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has officially begun a 30-day public comment/review period for its draft Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) Transportation 2040. A public meeting to address the draft T2040 document has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Lawrence Union Pacific Depot/Visitors Center; 402 N. 2nd St. Lawrence, Kansas from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
 
T2040 is a blueprint to guide the Lawrence-Douglas County area’s transportation development over the next 28 years. T2040 will represent the best attempts by citizens, governing bodies, planners and transportation experts to develop a vision for a healthy, safe, and efficient transportation system which will adequately serve Lawrence and all of Douglas County to the year 2040 and beyond.
 
The official 30-day public comment period for T2040 started on February 15, 2013 and will end on March 16, 2013. Comments received on or before March 16,2013 will be considered for the final document, to be presented to the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Policy Board for approval at their March 21, 2013 regular meeting.
