Snow Update: February 21, 1 p.m.

(Lawrence, Kan.) - As of 1 p.m. today, city crews have transitioned over to plowing operations.  This morning, crews worked to battle the heavy snow by treating main roadways with a salt/sand mixture.  The City of Lawrence received approximately 7.5 inches of snow in a five hour period.  Now that the snow has slowed, crews will focus on plowing operations.

Crews will begin by plowing main thoroughfares and streets leading into those main roadways.  Crews expect to move into residential areas overnight and work throughout the night plowing residential areas.  Crews will also begin cleaning up and hauling away snow in downtown Lawrence early Friday morning.

Additional city crews from Parks and Recreation and Utilities have been called in to assist as well as private contractors.  There is a potential for another two-to-three inches of snow today still in the Lawrence area.

"It is still critical that people don't get out in their vehicles in this snow if they absolutely don't have to," said Megan Gilliland, communications manager.  "Getting a vehicle stuck slows down the snow operations and makes the process take longer overall."
